SUMMER BLOG SERIES: Daddy, what’s a interview?
In our “best of” summer blog series, we asked our readers to pick their favorite blog post from the last six months. We will be sharing them every Monday and Thursday for the rest of the summer. Stuart chose this post, saying:
It reminds me that art is best created in a spirit of pure discovery and without any sense of competition with other people.

My younger daughter, whose first name we are not supposed to use for privacy reasons (so we are using her middle name), does the illustrations for our Fictionary series. I caught up with the artist while she was doing her La-la-loopsies. You know, just playing.

Hendrix: That’s a picture of me. That’s a picture of me, daddy. Do you hear me?
Interviewer: And what are you doing?
Hendrix: Coloring. I was doing coloring, daddy. I was showing you my coloring.
Interviewer: And why are you doing this coloring?
Hendrix: Because you said good job to me.
Interviewer: Right. You did a good job.
Hendrix: Are you so proud of me?
Interviewer: So proud. So why again are you doing this coloring?
Hendrix: Just because I like coloring.
Interviewer: Is that all?
Hendrix: Yeah, that’s all. Do you want some tea, daddy? Fresh tea?
Interviewer: I’d love some. Now what if I show you this? (Pulls up same image of book-eating cloven-hoofed demon on BA blog.)
Interviewer: That’s okay, you can do more later.
Hendrix: Like in the morning with my breakfast? And I get a prize?
Interviewer: Do you get a prize for doing these pictures?
Hendrix: Uh-huh. Like Cinderella… or Beauty and the Beast… You just listen to them in the car. If I turn the page, all of the pages, that’s why it will be the end and it will be over. Right?
Interviewer: Right. How many books do you have?
Hendrix: Three. Three, right?
Interviewer: And how many pictures have you done?
Hendrix: Uh, I don’t know. Wait. One…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…ten… No. I got to start at the beginning. One…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…ten.
Interviewer: Ten?
Hendrix: Ten…eleven…twelve…thirteen…Oh! My gosh. Thirteen…fourteen. Sixteen…
Interviewer: Do you mean fifteen?
Hendrix: I mean, fifteen, sixteen, nineteen, twenty.
Interviewer: So, almost twenty. And you have three books.
Hendrix: Three books got CDs in them, right, Daddy?
Interviewer: Right. But three books for twenty pictures?
Hendrix: Yeah, twenty pictures.
Interviewer: Do you have an agent?
Hendrix: What’s a agent?
Interviewer: Somebody to help you do these deals? Do you need an agent in today’s publishing climate?
Hendrix: Daddy, how long our dinner is?
Interviewer: Five minutes.
Hendrix: Well. I love you!

I know Hendrix, she is a friend of mine. She is also a charter member of the Chicken Man Club. She is the best!
